The murder of Stephen Lawrence in 1993 is one of the most shameful moments in contemporary British history. Part of a series of racist attacks on black Londoners, it revealed the growing threat of the far right and the complicity of the police in British public discourse.
Photographer Paul Halliday, of Scottish-Caribbean origin, waged war on two fronts seeking to bring about change within his community: on the streets and in the media. His personal story is an ordeal traversed by the systemic racism of British society, which began when his biological mother had to give him and his brother up for adoption due to social pressure. His encounter with photography at a young age, and with death amidst violent attacks and institutional insolence in the midst of anti-racism protests, make his story a unique and moving journey through suburban post-Thatcher London.
Key themes: racism, photography, London, documentary series, fiction series, fiction film.
